Keelan Mak – Sleep Talker

Emerging from the smoky late nights of Brisbane’s humid streets, Keelan Mak is a singer, songwriter, and producer creating a unique and sultry palette of electronic sounds.

Combining a blissful intoxicating song writing style with lush atmospheric production, Keelan seamlessly blends indie and electronic genres and combines them with his smooth, honeyed, emotional vocals and heartfelt personal storytelling.

Launching his career last year with debut single “Weigh You Down” and follow up single “Flicker“, Keelan Mak has made a mark with his sound and style. The two tracks have amassed over 500k streams, were added to major Spotify playlists (New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, Indie Arrivals and more), and has received spins on triple j unearthed, triple j, and handfuls of community radio stations.

The tracks also caught the attention of bookers and artists around Australia – leading to Mak supporting Vera Blue, E^ST, Matthew Young and Alice Ivy, as well as co-writing with some of Australia and New Zealand’s top upcoming producers including Fossa Beats, Maribelle, and SACHI, and a feature vocal on single “Wouldn’t Be The Same” from Australian electronic favourites Tora.

Recently winning the AMEX Music Backers grant, Keelan was also a finalist in the 2018 Billy Thorpe Scholarship, and was one of two hand-picked showcasing artists representing triple j unearthed at BIGSOUND 2018.

After announcing the forthcoming release of his debut EP ‘Test The Shallows’ , Keelan Mak today reveals the dark and enigmatic video for new single “Sleep Talker, a melancholic disco track which plays with garage house influences, woozy layers of synth and beats, and smooth vocal toplines.
Premiering on Notion Magazine overnight, the concept of the video centres on a lover who’s manufactured a fantasy world to escape the reality of his relationship.

The motel sets the real-life situation of two lovers meeting for a late-night rendezvous. The protagonist is quickly pulled into a hypnotic state which draws him out of the motel, stumbling towards a glowing red box within another world where he can temporarily be himself.

Novele – Furthest

Novele is the brainchild of 26-year-old singer/songwriter/producer Austin Fitzpatrick. From an early age, Austin was surrounded by music. His uncle, John Cale, is a founding member of Velvet Underground and his Aunt was a major label executive for
most her life. Austin’s father was also a musician and DJ and raised him on soul, R&B and Hip-Hop music.

Born in Mission Viejo and raised in Corona, Austin has a deep affinity for Southern California and its culture. Some of his earliest inspirations were California artists No Doubt, Dr. Dre and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. From there he ventured further into the Alternative and Hip-Hop realms like Run DMC, Bloc Party and Gorillaz (specifically their album Demon Days).

At age 12, Austin taught himself the drums and electric guitar and began to make his own music. He then started to play in a handful of bands and joined music programs at his junior high school. His passion for music only expanded as he entered high school. At age 14, he formed a band with his friends Kyle Harward and Jeff Riggs –
Novele.

Novele began as a garage-rock band in the Inland Empire of Southern California. In early years, the trio played countless house parties and shows in and around their hometown. This was mainly experimental music in the vein of As Tall As Lions. They then faced turbulent times due to a variety of mental health and funding issues and had to take a break from each other. Kyle and Jeff have since returned to the group, but Austin remains the principal songwriter.

During the time apart, Austin continued to grow as a musician, songwriter and producer. He began to focus more on creating hip-hop beats for rappers. However, his love for punk and pop music never left and he began to fuse the genres into one.

This is where Novele’s current sound stems from. A fusion of punk, hip-hop and pop that form a true alternative style. The songs and lyrics pull from Austin’s personal experiences and struggles with mental health and overcoming depression which encompasses the deep emotion and raw passion that fuel the music.

Now 10 years later, Novele is set to release a debut demo album on September 14th. The album contains ideas from the early band days (“After The War”, “Rubies”) as well as newer tracks that Austin composed on his own (“T.S.”, “Tears”). The album is a journey through the tempestuous yet beautiful lifespan of the band. Enjoy.

Anna Dellaria – I Choose Me

LA-based pop-meets-R&B songstress Anna Dellaria returns today with her new single, “I Choose Me.” The anthemic new tune will also be heard on TV Land’s critically-acclaimed show Younger, starring Hilary Duff and Sutton Foster.

Premiering today on The New Nine, “I Choose Me” is a powerful anthem for anyone who has ever felt apologetic for who they are or are not. Driven by tight production, Anna’s smooth soulful vocals captivate during intimate verses before booming with unbridled power on the refrain.

On the powerful meaning behind “I Choose Me,” Anna writes, “It’s an anthem for anyone who’s ever been manipulated, taken advantage of, or felt worthless for not fitting some ridiculous standard. In which you choose to commit to yourself and honor who you are, whether or not people are going to like or understand it. So often we are told to hide the parts of ourselves labelled as “flaws”, instead of looking at them as pieces that demonstrate strength, authenticity and character.  ‘I Choose Me’ is the moment you decide to say “f*ck that – I’m enough” and aims to allow those vulnerabilities to empower us instead of living with them as chains we can’t break and must make up for. ”

In keeping with the spirit of the song, Anna will also be donating a part of the proceeds collected from the song to Girls Inc of Alameda County. The organization gives girls from underprivileged neighborhoods the opportunities and resources that can help shape them into strong, smart, and bold young women.

A recent graduate of USC’s prestigious Thornton School of Music, Anna has truly honed her vocal and writing skills over the past few years – and it shows. She kicked off her career singing backup vocals for legendary acts such as John Fogerty and Chaka Khan.

Anna stepped into the spotlight last year with her single “Bolder,” landing a prominent sync of TV Land’s Younger and surpassing over 325K Spotify streams. With a rising profile, prominent furniture company Ethan Allen tapped Anna to sing in a national campaign that aired during the 2018 Academy® Awards.

Translating lyrical singer-songwriter catharsis a la Jeff Buckley through bold Aretha Franklin-style delivery, Anna Dellaria is quickly carving out a place of her own in the music industry.

TS Graye – MY2

TS Graye

MY2‘ – or Murder You 2 – is a remarkable introduction to an incredibly special new artist: TS Graye. At just seventeen years old, the Bristol singer-songwriter packs an almighty punch with her first release; powerful, smoky vocals glide atop smooth beats and neat production touches, with dark yet humorous lyricism inspired by her love of horror movies (fact: if she wasn’t a musician, she’d be pursuing a career as a makeup artist for horror shows).
Produced by Louis Mattrs, who she met online, ‘MY2’ is the first track from an EP due in October. In TS Graye’s words, “I wrote MY2 after finding out that someone I loved had broken my trust. It reflects the different and conflicting emotions I felt in the aftermath of that situation. At first, I play it off and try to fool myself that I’m cool with what has happened, but, in reality, I’m angry and hurting, hence the aggressive switch in the lyrics and production. I think you have to acknowledge and work through those feelings to accept the shit that happens and leave it in the past.
Growing up in the West Country, TS Graye’s influences never strayed far from home; trip hop and the sounds of neighbouring Bristol (e.g. Massive AttackTrickyPortishead) play out heavily in her music, but true to her generation she discovered most of the music she loves online (she references Lana Del ReyBanksPost Malone and Drake and her sound invokes likeness to greats RihannaSZAAlicia Keys and Jorja Smith). Self-taught, TS Graye learned how to produce and play piano from her bedroom and has been writing two songs a week since she was thirteen.
Despite spanning genres, exploring multiple perspectives, and experimenting with different vocal styles, ‘MY2′ works; it is natural, smooth and believable, showcasing a sophistication that belies her age. TS Graye’s intricate lyricism must also not be overlooked. With this single, she engages wordplay and double entendre – the line “guess I have to murder you 2” has multiple meanings, as does “f*ck with your beauty“.
Living in a small town encouraged TS Graye to explore the bounds of her creativity, and nowadays her passions outside of music include experimenting with make-up and working on a zine, which she has put into print ready to distribute alongside the release of her first pieces of original material.
The debut single ‘MY2‘ (“This ain’t just a heartbreak, this ain’t just a heartache…”) will be closely followed by next release ‘Rich Or Poor’ (“I don’t care about the past no more, just tell me that you love me…”). Sincere, evocative, relevant and inspired: TS Graye is an artist full of promise.
