Pierce Fulton – Overthinking Rain

There’s not much to do in Vermont…Though the combination of cold weather and small isolated towns do force an extremely bored kid to get creative. Now it’s 1998, picture Pierce Fulton at 6 years old, sitting on a tiny guitar amp with similarly tiny guitar in hand, begging his parents and family friends for song requests.

Long before his time as a DJ, Pierce Fulton was pleasing crowds with covers of all 60s-70s era classic rock, having no idea what kind of impact this would have later. Fast forward a few years and those song requests turned suggestions of various genres and eventually different instruments. A quick ear helped him in first picking up the guitar as a child and later moving onto drums, piano, trombone and more.

Pierce Fulton has always had this fascination for taking a concept from one instrument or genre and applying it to something new, an activity that would later define the core of his music. Now with 15 years of classic rock, reggae, blues and even a bit of metal and classical music under his belt, you can imagine how strange Pierce’s first interaction with electronic music was.

Somehow this small high school in Vermont was blessed with an incredible music department entirely run by two teachers, a husband and wife. One semester of Pierce’s senior year involved back to back music theory and electronic music production classes and another course in music history. The electronic music course taught students the fundamentals of production programs, basic synthesis/sound design, and sampling in addition to studying the history of iconic electronic music from the likes of Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Frankie Knuckles, and more. It was a revelation having had no real exposure to this world, growing up in such seclusion, so far away from club culture.

You might know Pierce most for his songs Kuaga, No More, Losing You & Landmines but with his recently released Borrowed Lives EP and debut album Better Places, he goes back to those early musical roots. “I’ve played some sort of music since I was a child,” says Pierce. “Anywhere from a guitar to just banging sticks on stage as a 5 year old at my aunts wedding, I’ve always ‘done’ something. Electronic music was the first time in my musical lifetime that I stopped playing things and started clicking and dragging. It’s a blast because you can be a one man band, but over time I realized I lost a lot of what made me a musician. I still can’t even play my guitar as well as I did when I was 14, don’t even get me started about drums or piano. With my songs like Landmines and No More, you can hear the live music sneaking it’s way back into my life but Borrowed Lives and my album Better Places are my first full steps back into being a musician again.”

Now 25 years old and based in Los Angeles, Pierce is still subject to the habits of his youth; bouncing between genres and instruments while simultaneously bringing all of these influences into the dance music he’s known for. When he isn’t out on the road, playing shows around the world, not too much has changed about those quiet, cozy nights spent in the studio.

Novele – Furthest

Novele is the brainchild of 26-year-old singer/songwriter/producer Austin Fitzpatrick. From an early age, Austin was surrounded by music. His uncle, John Cale, is a founding member of Velvet Underground and his Aunt was a major label executive for
most her life. Austin’s father was also a musician and DJ and raised him on soul, R&B and Hip-Hop music.

Born in Mission Viejo and raised in Corona, Austin has a deep affinity for Southern California and its culture. Some of his earliest inspirations were California artists No Doubt, Dr. Dre and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. From there he ventured further into the Alternative and Hip-Hop realms like Run DMC, Bloc Party and Gorillaz (specifically their album Demon Days).

At age 12, Austin taught himself the drums and electric guitar and began to make his own music. He then started to play in a handful of bands and joined music programs at his junior high school. His passion for music only expanded as he entered high school. At age 14, he formed a band with his friends Kyle Harward and Jeff Riggs –
Novele.

Novele began as a garage-rock band in the Inland Empire of Southern California. In early years, the trio played countless house parties and shows in and around their hometown. This was mainly experimental music in the vein of As Tall As Lions. They then faced turbulent times due to a variety of mental health and funding issues and had to take a break from each other. Kyle and Jeff have since returned to the group, but Austin remains the principal songwriter.

During the time apart, Austin continued to grow as a musician, songwriter and producer. He began to focus more on creating hip-hop beats for rappers. However, his love for punk and pop music never left and he began to fuse the genres into one.

This is where Novele’s current sound stems from. A fusion of punk, hip-hop and pop that form a true alternative style. The songs and lyrics pull from Austin’s personal experiences and struggles with mental health and overcoming depression which encompasses the deep emotion and raw passion that fuel the music.

Now 10 years later, Novele is set to release a debut demo album on September 14th. The album contains ideas from the early band days (“After The War”, “Rubies”) as well as newer tracks that Austin composed on his own (“T.S.”, “Tears”). The album is a journey through the tempestuous yet beautiful lifespan of the band. Enjoy.

Joe Hawes – Always

Joe Hawes in an English DJ and Producer based out of the South West town, Torquay. Having started his musical journey at a very young age, Joe first picked up a set of drum sticks at the age of twelve and instantly fell in love with the repetitive nature of creating beats. Also training in orchestral percussion, Joe would eventually go on to study Drums with Music and Music Tech at a music college, eventually finishing with a grade 8 in Drumming and also Orchestral Percussion. Having also learned to play the bass guitar, guitar and piano, music was always a career path Joe would dream about walking but it wasn’t until taking up DJing at the age of seventeen that his dream started to become a reality. With a natural tendency towards drumming and creating energetic beats, his transition into electronic music was a smooth one and Joe soon began to make a name for himself as both a DJ and a producer.
With positive energetic music always at the forefront of Joe’s work, house music was the natural direction for his DJing career to take. Using live drums and electronic pads in his sets, along with bass heavy drops quickly helped Joe find his place in the ranks of the finest up and coming Future House DJs in the UK and beyond. Inspired by the likes of Don Diablo and Martin Garrix, Joe fits the mould of a big room DJ to a tee and with appearances in Amnesia, Ibiza for Cream and at a sold out Wakestock Festival in Wales, supporting the likes of Calvin Harris and Deadmau5 along the way, it is easy to see why he is considered one to watch on the UK’s clubbing circuit. Currently holding residencies for Park Lane, Torquay and Embargos, London, as well as weekly performances in many of Torquay’s most popular student venues, Joe is a DJ who gets the same buzz from playing to a crowd in an intimate venue as he does to a super club in Ibiza, for him it really is all about the music.
Having done some remix work for various artist in the past, Joe is now concentrating his efforts on making his own original productions. After founding his own label, Coffee House Records, Joe has a catalogue of tracks awaiting release, including a rework of a Coldplay song, which has been “going off” at all of his recent shows. Joe also hosts a monthly radio show on Mixcloud, Coffee House Radio, where he showcases his own productions and shares his hottest selections.
With an ever growing list of local and international bookings, including a debut set in Ibiza’s Eden Nightclub, as well as a number of releases lined up on Coffee House Records, it’s clear that 2018 is going to be a real breakthrough year for Joe Hawes. Watch this space.
